The Traditional Christmas Cake

Thursday, 22 December 2016

Ideally, you are meant to bake this cake a month ago but luckily you can make this cake today and have it done it time for Christmas. Just grab a shopping list, purchase the items and bake!!

Ingredients:

500g of dried fruits, it should be in a bag of dried fruits or you can buy dried raisins, candied peel, sultanas, currants and glace cherries.
150ml of brandy or sherry, plus extra for feeding
2 large oranges, juice only
250g butter, softened
250g light or dark muscovado sugar
4 eggs
1 tbsp black treacle
250g plain flour
1 1/2 tsp mixed spice
3 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved
675g marzipan or just use the whole marzipan that it comes in

Method:

First, in a large bowl put your dried fruits in and pour in the brandy and orange juice but leave some for the extra feeding after. As we don't have enough time, leave the fruits to soak for approximately 10 hours.

Preheat your oven to gas mark 2/150 C. Grease and line your tin with parchment paper and set aside.

Next, in another large bowl mix the butter, sugar, eggs and treacle together until smooth. Then sieve in the flour and mixed spice until blended and smooth. Stir in the soaked fruit and spoon it in to your cake tin and level the surface.

Bake in to over for 1 1/2 hours to 2 1/2 hours depending on your oven. Be sure to check it at regular intervals but do not open it! Just use your eyes to see how it is baking. After it has finished baking, take out the cake and set aside. Whilst the cake is cooling, piece the cake with a skewer and feed some more brandy in to the cake.

On to the next day.....

By now your cake has successfully cooled and your home will definitely smell like Christmas. Gently warm the apricot jam and brush the jam over the surface of the cake.

Roll out the marzipan to about a 1 cm thick and you are able to see that it will cover the cake. With the rolling pin, cover the marzipan over the rolling pin and then roll it over the cake. Smooth it out with your hands until its soft and covered. Do the same thing to the white fondant icing.

Will you be making a Christmas Cake?

Getting Your Skin Party Ready For Christmas

Sunday, 18 December 2016

As we are finally in the party season, it's time to make sure that our skin looks good and glowy for the amount of glitter and fake eyelashes that we will be applying on our faces.

Superdrug Facial Masks

I love how inexpensive these masks her yet they are so effective. Personally, I prefer peel off masks, I don't know what it is but there is something about peeling off my mask to ensure that my skin feels smooth and soft. These masks are very gentle on sensitive skin (well mine) and it makes my skin feel completely hydrated after using them.

Electronic Facial Brush

I have been wanting the Clinique Facial Brush for a very long time, I still want it but I recently got a SliverCrest facial brush, which I love to use. Applying my Clinique Facial Soap on my brush and let the magic happen. The brush works very well, it vibrates in circular motions so you also have to do use the brush in circular motions as well. Spending at least one minute exfoliating your skin leaves your skin feeling soft and most importantly clean especially after using the facial mask.

DIY Lip Scrubs // Lush Lip Scrub

As I showed the method of making a scrub in my DIY Brown Sugar Scrub , I will be using this on my lips. First, I will put some water on my lips and then with the scrub exfoliate my lips. After using the scrub, I will apply a hydrating, double duty lip cream as it is very cold outside. Or, I would use the LUSH Bubblegum lip scrub which also works as effective, if not better. I love the way this scrub tastes as well, I know I am not meant to taste it.

Moisturising Creams

After washing my face, I will be making sure that my every part of my skin is fully moisturised as makeup does take a lot of your skin. I will be first applying a chapstick or Vaseline to my lips. After using this, I will use my Clinique All About Eyes eye cream to make my eyes look more awake and for better application for my concealer. After, I will use the Clinique Moisture Surge which is a gel like cream to hydrate my face. To ensure that my skin is toned, I will be spraying my Vitamin E Refreshing Facial Spray to even out my skin.

How will you be getting your skin party ready this year?

A Chirstmas Party Makeup Menu

Saturday, 17 December 2016

As we are now in the party festive season, I thought I'd share my makeup for an Christmas party event.

BASE

On to the makeup portion, I always ensure that I apply primer even if I'm only wearing concealer. The Clinique Universal Primer creates a smooth base for my foundation, For foundation, I will be using the Clinique Superbalance Foundation which is very lightweight. After that, I use a mixture of the NARS Creamy Concealer and LA Pro Girl Concealer to highlight as well as conceal the different areas of my face. To set that concealer, I use the Ben Nye Powder in Banana and Collection Translucent Sheer Powder with a fluffy brush underneath my eyes, some days I do bake but most days I don't. To set the rest of my face, I use the MAC Pressed Powder with a huge powder brush. For my highlight, I like to use the Revlon Highlighting Palette for a light glow to my face. To finish off my face, I like to spray a bit of MAC Studio Fix Plus to set my face and give it a dewy effect!

EYES

On to my eyebrows, I like to use the MUA Eyebrow Pencil to lightly fill in my eyebrows and then I use the Anatasia Beverly Hills Eyebrow Promade to make my eyebrows a bit bold and sharp. Then, I move onto my eyes. For my eyes, I will be using the Morphe Eyeshadow in Royalty which is a dark purple. Putting this all over my lid especially in my crease with a small fluffy brush. Then I will use MAC eyeshadow in ... for a brighter purple colour on the centre part of my lid. Of course, I can not go without liquid eyeliner, so I will use my MUA Liquid Liner in Matte Black. Now, it's the festive time so I will be wearing the Ardell Demi Wispies. But whilst letting I let the glue get tacky, I will coat my lashes with the Clinique High Impact Mascara.

LIPS

For my lips, I should opt for a red lip but I'm gonna go for a nude. I like to mix the MAC Lipstick in Noir which is a dark, brown with my Clinique Lipstick In Nude Pop for a nude colour. I will also put a coat of lipgloss on my lips as well!

Giving Back This Christmas

Tuesday, 13 December 2016

Christmas is the season of giving that includes giving presents to your loved ones and celebrating with others. Seeing as it is the season of giving, there are many ways that you can get involved in sharing the Christmas spirit and helping those that are less fortunate during this time of year.

The Christmas Jumper Day | I am sure that all of you that are reading this have probably have heard of this charity organisation. The idea behind this organisation is to wear a Christmas jumper of your choice and donate money to a good cause. You can sign up for the fundraising pack and use it to raise money at work, school or at home, a good idea of doing it at home could be hosting a Christmas party.

Send a Smile With Santa | This charity works with funding projects to enhance better patient care within the Barts Health NHS Trust. This Christmas you are able to send a smile with Santa, send in a donation and help bring a smile to some of the children have a better Christmas!

More Than A Gift | This charity works with helping young homeless people this Christmas. You can send a small gift like toiletries as a Christmas present to a homeless person, you can also include a lovely card to them! The good thing about the Centrepoint involvement is that you can send as much or as little as you want, their website provides many packages that you can pick from like a Christmas Dinner for only £10!

At Home Workouts

Monday, 12 December 2016

I do love going to the gym very much. not many people do like going to the gym but personally for me going to the gym is a lifestyle that I enjoy. I like to see the change in my body, I like that when I am stressed I am able to take it out on the machines in the gym and I love working out overall.
As I am sure you know working out does include different aspects of the body, some people have days dedicated to certain areas that they want to focus on. Days like this include, back, chest, arms, abs, glutes, leg and full body workouts. I personally love working out my lower body, I also love the fact that you don't have to go to the gym to do such workouts. Listed below are some of my favourite home workouts on video and lists. I hope I explain them easily!

Upper Body Days:

My personal favourite people to watch or get a routine from are Whitney Simmons and GraceFitUK. I also like to get some ideas from Gains4Girls on Instagram as well!

An example of a workout routine for the upper body days at home could be:

  • Press Ups - 4 sets of 10 reps
  • Using resistance bands, you could follow this workout along with Whitney Simmons.
  • With weights, you can do triceps extension to close row (4 sets of 12 reps) the idea is that you are bending forward and whilst holding your weights you are only using your lower arms to move the weight back.
  • Arm Circles (3 sets of 10 reps)
  • Elbow Presses ( 4 sets of 10 reps) now I do not know the technical term for this, but I do this exercise so I'm sure of this. The idea is that you have your elbows close together with your hands in a prayer position and then you are going to push up and down fast for about 30 secs. You should immediately feel it!
Lower body days:

My favourite kind of days..

An example of a workout for the lower body days at home could be:

  • Glute kickback (4 sets of 15 reps) - On all fours on the floor, push your leg back and bring it forward and then push back. So you are essentially pushing something back, if that makes any sense.
  • Squats (4 sets of 12 reps) - You can do this with weights or body weight, make sure that you are squatting properly and please ensure that your knee caps don't go over your knees.
  • Jumping squats ( 4 sets with 30 secs in each set) - This will definitely make you feel unbelievably sweaty but it is worth it!
  • A superset (this means two exercises back to back with no rest, 3 sets, 10 reps) - This includes sit-ups  where you are lying on the floor with your feet on the floor and you are going to lift your body up in attempt to sit up hence why its called a sit up. But it hurts. Straight after doing 10 reps of that you are going to in to leg raises, where you are laying on the floor and you are going to lift your legs up and back down again. You will automatically feel this in your abs, but it benefits.
I am not a gym instructor nor have I learnt academically about fitness, but I thought it would be good to share some of the workouts that I do and have seen on some of my favourite fitness bloggers.

Some other people I'd recommend to watch/read would be:

What Goes On My Face Everyday?

I know what you are thinking, you are looking at the title of this post and you are thinking...why would you come up with this title? My answer to your question is why not? Today's post is all about the items that I put on my face on a daily basis.

In the morning, the first thing I like to do is wash my face. Using my Clinique Facial Soap, I cleanse my face and remove the dirt from last night's makeup that may be leftover. After washing my face, I use theVaseline Pertroleum Jelly to moisturise my lips, some days I opt for a Burt Bees Chapstick others days I go for Vaseline. This really nourishes my lips and reduces any cracks in my lips during this cold time. For my eyes, I use the Clinique All About Eyes eye cream because I can tell you know, my under eye circles are very dark. For the rest of my face, I use the Clinique Moisture Surge and spray my Vitamin E Facial Spray to ensure that my face is completely moisturised and fresh before applying makeup.

On to the makeup portion, I always ensure that I apply primer even if I'm only wearing concealer. The Clinique Universal Primer creates a smooth base for my foundation, on days where I am in a rush I like to use the Clinique Chubby in The Nude Foundation Stick but recently I purchased the Clinique Superbalance Foundation which is very lighweight. I was surprised as I haven't used a liquid foundation in a while, it felt like I was wearing my foundation stick and easily blended into my skin. After that, I use a mixture of the NARS Creamy Concealer and LA Pro Girl Concealer to highlight as well as conceal the different areas of my face. To set that concealer, I use the Ben Nye Powder in Banana with a fluffy brush underneath my eyes, some days I do bake but most days I don't. To set the rest of my face, I use the MAC Pressed Powder with a huge powder brush. On to my eyebrows, I like to use the MUA Eyebrow Pencil to lightly fill in my eyebrows and then I use the Anatasia Beverly Hills Eyebrow Promade to make my eyebrows a bit bold and sharp. Then, I move onto my eyes. Now...my eye makeup is always dependent on my mood. Am I the only one? But there is one thing that always stands with my eye makeup - I always wear winged liner. It's an obsession, it's like my signature look, if I don't have it on I feel weird. So I usually wear my winged liner, some days I like to use the MAC Blush in Pinch Me which I talked about a lot in my Duo Blush post. But as we are in the fesitive season, I've started to go with more darker purple eyes (I'll be speaking about this Xmas makeup look this week). For my highlight, I like to use the Revlon Highlighting Palette for a light glow to my face. To finish off my face, I like to spray a bit of MAC Studio Fix Plus to set my face and give it a dewy effect!

For the evening part of my facial routine, I like to use the Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Milk which effectively takes off my makeup without aggressively harming my skin but also leaves it feeling silky smooth. I use the same soap I used in the morning to wash off my face and I still to the same morning skincare routine, but this time I use my Vitamin E Facial Oil.

What are your favourite things to put on your face??

The Lazy Day Guide

Saturday, 10 December 2016

I'm sure there are many of us that absolutely love lazy days where you have nothing to do, nowhere to go and you just find yourself lounging around your house. I love those days but then there are also days where you find that you really cannot be bothered to have a full face of makeup, hair done and fancy outfit but you still have to leave the house to do those mundane errands. So here's a wee little guide for these days...

On days where I don't want to leave the house....

These days roughly include a huge bar of chocolate, my tv remote, my laptop, my phone, a huge duvet and a onesie. The best type of days, as we are nearly approaching Christmas there are loads of Christmas movies available to watch, some of my favourite include Elf, The Best Man Holiday, This Christmas and Home Alone. At the moment, I'm in the middle of catching up with my favourite TV show, Scandal. I didn't watch most of Season 5 so I am taking my time with it. With a huge bar of chocolate and my duvet, I am absolutely comfortable. Once my head starts to hurt from staring at a TV screen all day, I like to either do a puzzle (yes I know) or complete a crossword puzzle or read or make lists. I usually do this for roughly an hour and then I'm back to the TV. I know, I'm a TV addict. I do eat other types of food, not just chocolate but that's all dependant on how lazy I am feeling that day.

On days where I have to leave the house....

I do wear the most minimal amount of makeup, I usually opt for my Clinique Chubby In The Nude Foundation stick because it's lightweight, medium coverage and very quick when applying. I do wear some concealer - I mean we have got to hide those circles after watching Christmas films all day right? The concealer combo that I usually go for is the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and LA Pro Girl Concealer. Of course, I don't want to look like a disco ball and I definitely don't want my makeup to move around my face, I lightly powder my face with the MAC Pressed Powder. Of course, I have to fill in my eyebrows - on days like this, I go for the MUA Eyebrow Pencil as it's quicker to fill in your brows. To finish off the whole minimal look, I go for the Clinique Lipstick in Nude Pop over my chapstick. Outfit wise, this is probably a winter turtle neck dress or tracksuit bottoms, whatever I'm feeling that day to be fair. And off out I go..

What happens on your lazy days?
